In Memory of our Beloved Chairman, Celeste Holm
Last summer, the world lost a legend. Celeste Holm, Oscar-winning star of stage and screen, passed away at the age of 95. One of her passions was to ensure that children’s lives were transformed through the arts, and for 17 years she served as the Chairman of Arts Horizons. Celeste was always proud to tell her friends and audiences that we have brought arts programming to over eight million children over the past 35 years.
In Celeste’s memory, and as a legacy to her remarkable spirit and achievement, we have established The Celeste Holm Memorial Fund. Her devotion to our work was only a small part of Celeste’s lifelong dedication to all of the arts, and she had a personal commitment to empower children to reach their potential through the arts. In her own words, “Through the arts we are reminded of what a gift it is to be human … an educated mind without an educated heart is no education at all.” Yet the U.S. Department of Education reported last April, “fewer public schools are offering arts compared to a decade ago,” a decline attributed mainly to budget cuts. Celeste’s response was, “If the government can’t do it, then we must.”
Celeste knew that Arts Horizons’ programs contributed to improved academic performance by making learning challenging and stimulating, teaching creativity, discipline and teamwork, giving kids a reason to stay in school and off the streets and promoting self esteem. She was with us in classrooms and workshops, cajoled funders, lobbied legislators and encouraged our staff and her fellow directors by example. We invite you to join us in celebrating the memory of our extraordinary friend by supporting The Celeste Holm Memorial Fund.
Every dollar you contribute to the fund will directly bring more arts programming into the lives of more children. Thanks to Frank Basile, Celeste’s loving husband, donors of $100 or more will receive a CD of Celeste’s remarkable recording of “Memories of Oklahoma.” This CD features Celeste as you’ve never heard her before.
