“This is so relaxing I don’t want to leave”

Arts Horizons Teaching Artist Nina Tantillo-Elton led a family workshop a the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM)  in conjunction with NYC DOE Hospital Schools to support families with loved ones in medical crisis.  A group over 25 participants experienced the meditative and healing power of ojo de dios (eye of god in Spanish).

Creative arts workshops are particularly valuable for family members, hospital school educators, administrators, counselors, and support staff from CHAM, to share time, exchange information, and participate in a healing practice during critical times such as the hospitalization of a child.   Overheard at the workshop, a mother shared how the opportunity allowed a moment of restoration, “It got me not thinking for a while.”

The image of the God’s eye as a protective shield is particularly poignant for family and healthcare professionals.  The meditative practice becomes prayer-like, cultivating strength and a shield of protection.
